Many deployments use dual or redundant communication paths — for example, cellular as primary and 900MHz radio as backup — to ensure continuous, reliable operation even if one channel fails.

GPS-based emergency vehicle preemption uses an in-vehicle cellular/GPS unit that broadcasts the vehicle's real-time location and route. The system proactively requests green signals at upcoming intersections, clears cross-traffic, and dynamically adapts preemption zones.
