Traffic Signal Control Cabinets

A control panel is typically an interior component—such as a load switch panel or termination panel—mounted inside the cabinet, while the control cabinet is the complete outdoor enclosure housing the controller, panels, power supply, and detection equipment. The cabinet provides weatherproofing and physical security; the panel handles specific electrical functions within it.

A traffic controller is the programmable device that determines signal phase timing, sequencing, and detector response at an intersection. Housed inside the cabinet, it processes inputs from vehicle and pedestrian detectors to safely and efficiently manage right-of-way, adjusting for traffic volume, preemption requests, and coordinated signal timing plans.

NEMA traffic control cabinets are available in multiple form factors including G36, M49/M60, O67, P44/P52/P65, Super P, and R77, each sized to match different intersection complexity and equipment density requirements. All are constructed from weatherproof 5052-H32 aluminum and support up to 16 movement phases and 64 detection channels.

NEMA cabinets follow legacy TS1/TS2 standards with proven, widely deployed hardware, while ATC cabinets like the ATCC use high-speed serial communications for simplified wiring, smaller footprints, and up to 32 signal outputs with 120 detection inputs, supporting Caltrans, NEMA, and ITS standards for future-ready smart intersection deployments.

Battery backup is typically added via a separate outdoor BBS enclosure, such as Alpha Technologies' Type 3R rated units, which integrate UPS modules, transfer switches, and battery management to keep signals operating during utility outages, sags, and brownouts without a truck roll.

Look for UL Listed or UL 508-approved enclosures, NEMA TS1/TS2-1/TS2-2 compliance, ISO and IPC certification for manufacturing quality, and compliance with state DOT specifications such as Caltrans, NYDOT, or FHWA/TEES requirements, depending on your jurisdiction's approved equipment list.
