UPS Batteries

A battery switch monitors incoming utility voltage and, when it detects a drop or failure, activates internal relays to transfer the connected load onto battery power within milliseconds. Many models, like the Universal Automatic Transfer Switch, also support manual override and fail-safe operation for maintenance or emergency situations.

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) for battery backup is a device that seamlessly switches a load between utility power and battery or generator power without manual intervention. Alpha's Universal Automatic Transfer Switch (UATS) and Universal Generator Transfer Switch (UGTS) maintain source isolation while enabling fail-safe and manual operation modes.

Alpha UPS systems are designed to work with AlphaCell 195XTV, 240XTV, 3.5HP, and 4.0HP batteries, supporting configurations of up to four batteries per enclosure. These batteries pair with programmable temperature-compensated chargers and AlphaGuard battery management for balanced performance and extended service life.

Runtime depends on the UPS module wattage, number of batteries installed, and the connected load. Systems using FXM HP modules ranging from 350W to 2000W paired with multiple AlphaCell batteries can sustain traffic signal and ITS operations through extended outages, with generator transfer switches available for prolonged events.

Outdoor UPS battery systems for traffic and ITS applications should meet NEMA Type 3R ratings, which protect against rain, sleet, and external ice formation. Rugged 0.125" aluminum enclosures with three-point latching hardware further safeguard batteries, chargers, and transfer switches from harsh environmental conditions.

UPS batteries should be monitored using remote battery monitoring systems or battery management tools like AlphaGuard, which track voltage, temperature, and charge cycles. Reduced runtime, failed self-tests, or age beyond the manufacturer's recommended service life are strong indicators that replacement is needed to maintain reliable backup power.
