Flasher units are generally categorized as thermal, electronic, and solid-state (LED) flashers. Thermal flashers use a bimetallic strip, electronic flashers rely on circuitry for precise timing, and solid-state/LED flashers, like those in JSF Technologies' AB and FL Series, offer programmable flash duration, intensity, and synchronization for modern traffic systems.

Flasher signal systems can run on AC power with battery backup or standalone solar power, allowing off-grid installation in remote or hard-to-wire locations. Battery backup ensures continued operation during power outages, while solar-powered units reduce installation costs and environmental impact.

Many wireless flasher systems, such as JSF Technologies' WP6-equipped beacons, offer a communication range exceeding 2,000 meters, with system-to-system flash synchronization across multiple units.
